Our Team met with Dr. Olia Fillina, ND from Physiomed to ask her a few questions about health, family and working out!
Hi Olia, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. I think that our readers to would to know why you choose to become a Naturopathic Doctor?
I come from a family who leads a very healthy lifestyle – enjoying nutritious food, regular activity, good company and overall health promotion. As a result, when I was deciding about my career path, it was a very natural progression to enter the Naturopathic Medical Field – which represents my core values so well. I truly believe that we all have the capacity to maximize our health with the right mindset and natural treatment options. Thus, by choosing natural and safe therapies we are helping our body and mind to achieve balance and health, rather than relying on synthetic drugs to suppress or numb our symptoms. Looking back at how Naturopathic Medicine has helped me to successfully maximize my own health, I get reminded every day that I love and believe in my profession.
Where did you attend school?
There is a bit of confusion in the media as to how much schooling Naturopathic Doctors receive. Some are under the impression that we take a few “Nutrition” courses and we’re good to go. Fortunately, that’s not the case! I received my Honours’ Bachelor degree in Health Sciences (minoring in psychology) at University of Calgary, and my 4-year Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine at Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. Throughout the years, I have had the privilege to be mentored by leaders in Stem Cell Therapy, Applied Kinesiology and Mind-Body Medicine.
Why would moms and young kids come to see you?
I really enjoy working with moms and their kids because Naturopathic Medicine has so many safe and effective tools to help them! Whether it is addressing the child’s allergies, digestive issues, or mom’s detox and weight loss plans, I only use safe, natural and well-researched therapies that deliver the results. For example, most of the treatments that I use are safe to take for a mom who’s breastfeeding! I’m always so happy to see the health-improvements my patients are making and the smiles on their faces when they feel the difference!
What is your philosophy about health?
I truly believe that health is not just something you can get by taking a supplement and avoiding all the ‘dangerous triggers’. Instead, health is the overall state of mind and body, where one is in balance with self and their surroundings. I also believe that health is never static – rather it is a consistent and continuous way of lifestyle.
What is a good advice you can give our moms about being healthy?
With the best intentions, moms often dedicate significant time and energy all to their families. As a result, what I see in my practice, are moms who are simply exhausted or imbalanced in their health. My advice to moms would be to show love and gratitude to self on daily basis by finding 15-20 minutes for personal-time. Find a Pilates video that you like, journal, go for a stroll, or simply read your favourite book – all of these practices will help to align body and mind. As for improving one’s health with natural products – the market is saturated with different supplements and self-help books. However many of these products are either poor quality or simply unsafe if used inappropriately. With a proper assessment, I design a personalized treatment plan for my patients to help them feel their best. I would like to invite Toronto Mommies to discover what Naturopathic Medicine can do for them!
